What started as a nightmare in the middle of the night turned into a race against time and a powerful example of how the right technology can make all the difference. When Dennis received a 3:30 a.m. alert that his bike was moving, he had no idea he was about to track it down himself and assist the police in recovering it.

Here’s Dennis’s story:

“On the night of February 15th, I was woken at 3:30 a.m. by a sound I couldn’t identify in my dream. It turned out to be an alert from my BikeFinder app: my bike was moving.

Still half asleep, I ran down to the basement and immediately saw that the door had been forced open. Two locks had been destroyed, and despite two installed alarm systems, my bike had been stolen.

I called the police right away, and they made their way to me as soon as they had time. They documented the break-in and secured the damaged locks as evidence.

After the police had registered everything, officially listed the bicycle for search and left, what had happened really sank in. The feeling that my bike was gone was truly awful.

Then I received another movement alert from the BikeFinder app. This is when I activated the tracking mode and followed the signal by car while staying on the phone with the police officers. It was a real chase, as the location kept changing so quickly.

At some point, the bike was in a residential area and stopped moving. I drove there, parked, and followed the GPS signal on foot through the snow. I noticed tire tracks that matched my slightly wider bike tires, that’s when I knew I was close. Moments later, I found my bike locked outside an apartment building.

I immediately called the police and waited in freezing temperatures (-6°C) until they arrived.

Using the ownership documentation in my BikeFinder app, I was able to clearly prove to the police the bike was mine. The officers cut the thief’s lock with a grinder, and I was allowed to take my bike home on the spot.

Although the thief had removed all accessories, like lights and reflectors, I had insurance that I had with the BikeFinder, which also covered accessories.

I am incredibly happy and relieved to have my bike back. Without BikeFinder’s alerts, precise tracking, and proof of ownership, recovery would not have been possible.

For the future, I’ve upgraded my basement security with two heavy-duty motorcycle locks.”

Note from BikeFinder

Despite two bike locks, a locked basement door, and installed alarm systems, a thief was able to steal a bike.

Traditional security measures alone were simply not enough. This experience proves that while strong locks are important, smart technology can be the crucial factor when it matters most.
